13. SPECIAL MACHINES/AUTOMATED EQUIPMENT/ASSEMBLY FIXTURES

A. Problem/Issue

Over the years there has been many custom equipment needs by the companies we serve. Along with the device itself, often a method of manufacture is necessary due to the nature of medical device manufacturing. Listed are a few of the notable special equipment projects.

B. Project Summaries

We developed a special lead cutting fixture for a major pacemaker company. They wanted some way to control and collect the small MP35N clippings when they trimmed the end of the lead in preparation for crimping the ferrule to the coil. We developed a small hood with vacuum that attached directly to the specialty cutters that they were using. After the cut, the cuttings were sucked away into a filter system and there was making it impossible to find it's way into the packaged product.

We designed and built a proprietary plastic winding machine for a vacuum forming manufacturer. They needed a machine to wind up the scrap plastic after they had punched out the product downstream of the vacuum former. We completely fabricated the machine including electronics and safety cut-off. We went on to install and troubleshoot the machine. They still use the system today.

C. Capabilities

We use our network of associates to brainstorm a problem area and then begin to design. Using this approach, we ensure that the assembly fixture or tool satisfies the requirements of the customer.
